I own a 1969 Gold Top Deluxe with P90s installed. I believe these must have been a retrofit. I'm NOT a Gibson fanboi, I'm a Fender guy. Having said that, I played this guitar when the previous owner, a mate, brought it to work in one day (in a guitar shop where we both worked). I was *astounded* by the sound and I made him promise that he would sell me the guitar if he ever parted with it. Fast forward a few years and I now own it. The luthier I engaged to refret its super low frets, told me that it was a real ripper. It has a three piece neck (which are very stable btw) but a 'non-pancake' body.

My first 'good' guitar was a 1974 Gibson SG standard walnut, with bigsby, in 1975 at 18 yrs old. I must have struck lucky, it was a fantastic instrument. Took me 6 months or so to set it up to my liking, gigging from the off. There wasn't the information available back then, everything was DIY. Lasted me until 1983, when my wife persuaded me I didn't need that and my fender telecaster, so I sold it to buy a fridge 😆 But I have to say, the quality was impeccable. I wonder what happened to it 🤔 Great video, brought back many memories 👍

Interesting video. I've just bought a Harley Benton Bass VI to compliment my 5 string bass, and extended range 7 and 8 string guitars, primarily for progressive rock and metal purposes. So I'm really looking forward to see where it fits in. Certainly for super low single note riffs that would otherwise require a 9 string, it's gonna get a lot of use. But seeing the way you were playing it, especially at the end, makes me wanna take it beyond that. Such good playing too!

The worst LP Custom that i ever tried was a 3 pickup original 1959. That was just a boat anchor, but probably a $100.000 boat anchor. I know a Deluxe that sound awesome, although i am not a fan at all of the mini humbuckers. My suggestion would be to put some nice P90s in there instead.

I`ve found an obvious fake Gibson 335 in my local store here in Ireland, its nice and cheap, and plays very well, (and sounds good too.) so here`s my plan, as I didn`t fake it, I plan to slightly redesign its headstock Logo, and call it a "Gigson." with a small decal adjustment, then at least any cork sniffing Purists out there will have nothing to have a hissy little melt down about, cuz I`m not trying pass it off as an actual Gibson, and the fake name was already on it when I bought it anyway. 😎🎸

In 1978 I wanted to get my first GOOD guitar. I wanted a Strat - then I played one and I could not believe how heavy and stiff they were. I wondered WHY people played Strats (not knowing they played old ones.) Then I tried a Les Paul 1978, $100 more - even worse. Heavy and dull. Then I tried a Guild electric - pretty good. In the end, I found a local maker who built custom guitars and he made me one like I wanted, his name was Wayne Charvel.

Respectfully; I disagree. Unless I was exceptionnally lucky, but it is not my impression, I have been enjoying a 79 Custom since new. Yes, 44 years ago. I have played litteraly, hundreds of electric guitars in my career and I have to say that it has remained my reference for reliability, stability in tuning and really great sound. I have owned Ricks, Teles, PRS (US made) and many, more. The PRS is the closest one in most respects. I also repaired, adjusted and upkept tons of other Gibsons. I see your point when comparing my guitar to late fifties Standards but honnelstly, I almost bought a nice Standard from the 2010s, thinking that the no veneer, body, mahogany neck and all would make it nice and light. To my surprise, i used a scale and found out it weighed exactly the same as my Custom. So, I did not buy it as my custom souded way better. Really. That's my story. by the way, the 5 piece maple neck as there are layers of mahogany between the maple pieces, is the same construction found on extremely expensive Gibson arch top Jazz guitars and it bounces the energy right back into the strings. Not as necessary in a solid body as it is in a arch top that needs all the moving power to get that top going, but it does make for incredible sustain. That is my experience with it. I recorded a lot of tracs with it, took it out in the sun playing gigs, transported it in cars that get to -30 degrees celcius here in Montréal and has always, to this day been the most sable for tuning of all the guitars I have ever seen. I have had no need to touch the trust rod in decades and I play a rather low action. Neck is straight as a steel ruler. Yes I know, but I'll keep it until my descendants sell it; hopefuly to some player that will tell the difference and enjoy what an exceptionnal instrument this is. Great playing by the way. I really enjoy.

C'mon dude... in your hands even 80's Hondos sound awesome. Clearly showing that the defining factor is not the guitar or it's year of production... Besides that, no Gibson Les Pauls ever will hold their tuning. For a 3.000 - 20.000EU guitar, that's pretty awful... Yes.. that's blasphemy ... I know.. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Back then, I saw, played and heard some real horror shows coming from both Gibson and Fender. Huge chuck of lacquer getting knocked off a new Strat hitting the corner of a display case only to reveal completely GREEN wood. I don't mean like poplar green shades can be. It was sappy fresh wood. Not kidding. Les Pauls that you couldn't distinguish one note from another even in a major chord. Just mush. An endless list of reasons to start looking across the room at the Ibanez "Artist" series and Washburn Eagles. ---------- That said: (from a comment I gave in another discussion re: tone woods).......... When I bought my very first real quality guitar, LP Gold Top (brand new '78), I chose it after playing it a while and listening to it - not having plugged it in AT ALL the whole time. Not kidding. Once I found one that felt good, I (uncomfortably) pressed my ear down on the shoulder and listened to the (wait for it) GUITAR. Not the pickups. not the tone knobs. The wood. The instrument. When I found one where all the notes rang even and true, and chords were clear and sounded all the notes together with sounding mushed or mixed, then I checked the neck (3-piece maple [loved it]) and made sure everything else was in order, I ended up with one of my favorite guitars I've ever owned. Great tone, Even note balance. Enjoyable sustain............. Every guitar or bass I've ever bought or built since then had to pass that test before I have ever considered anything about the electronics. The sparky stuff has massive affect on the output sound, for sure. But you have to start with the instrument first. IT has to be right first. I won't do it any other way. - - - And I loved my '78, pancake, volute, not too heavy Standard. (w/double cream Super Distortion - [because Ace used it]) 🙂

Blonde Bassman and Cabinet just casually in the background. My Dads LP Custom is very heavy but sounds awesome, Gibson engraved pickups, needs a refret. My 74 Wine Red Deluxe is a standout guitar and I'm so lucky to have it, pancake or not. The other thing to think about is a guitar that old has probably been worked on, if that work is good, you're in. You're playing on the goldtop is the best (to me and my taste) I've heard you do. Great video thanks.
